Be Your Best Self: Putting the “U” in Success

Many people often say “be yourself” when asked about what a person should do to achieve success. I think it is more appropriate to say “be your best self” when success in business is what you are striving for.

No matter what type of career you’re in, it is always a good idea to start working on yourself if you want to reach the top. You are your own investment, your very own asset. Thus, you need to always put your best foot forward in the workplace.

Here are some tips you should know if you want to put the “U” in success:

Define Your Dreams

Being hardworking and passionate with your career is one thing that people can never forget about you.

I’m sure you don’t want to enter a career path that is sure to fail. In the beginning, you would need to answer the age-old question of “what you want to do with your career”.

This is a question you have to answer as honestly as you can.

If you want to succeed in your career and let people know your name, you first have to identify your goals.

Your goals will define the paths you have to take and the bridges you need to cross. By sticking to your goals, you will have an outline of how you would need to work.

Being aware of your goals will help you outline your game plan in your workplace. This will assist you in assessing what you should be, what you should do, and how you should act.

Once you’re sure of your goals and ambition, you’re ready to face the world and start your personal journey to success.

Build Your “First Impression”

There’s an old saying that says “first impressions last”, and I think that it is very important to building your name in your chosen career.

Your reputation is something that will stick with you as long as you stay in your workplace. This is why, you have to build it properly.

People’s first impressions of you will dictate how they would react to you on a daily basis. They would treat you differently if you show your aces even from the very first time you waltzed into the door.

Nail that first impression, and you’ll immediately feel good vibes in your office life.

Invest in Your Own Skills

I’m sure you already have a couple of skills in your arsenal that equips you for your daily life at work. However, you should not stop at that.

There’s a reason why professionals have seminars and conventions that they have to attend from time to time. Everybody needs development, and you need to make time for it too.

Don’t stop at what you currently know. There are many activities that can effectively hone your skills. The best ones are not scared of listening to new information that may help them develop their abilities.

Never be afraid of trying something new. There are many skills that you can pick up that might be of use in the near future.

Many activities may sound a bit useless to you now, but you’ll never know which ones may come in handy. You might think learning shorthand writing is not for you, but it might help you with work someday.

Be Firm in Your Values

If everybody says you should paint your walls pink, would you agree with them even if you absolutely hate pink?

A lot of people say yes to ideas that they don’t agree with simply because they are afraid of being misjudged by their peers. In this process, people throw their values away just to be accepted by others.

Each person has a set of beliefs that they were brought up with. These beliefs become the framework of our personalities, and greatly affect our values.

Your values and beliefs define who you really are, and you should stick to them. If you dislike something, or disagree with a certain popular opinion, do not be afraid to express it.

However, you need to be very careful when expressing your opinions. Nobody wants anybody to force their beliefs or insult their opinions.

Know What Motivates You

Every working day can be exhausting. There are so many stressors that can affect your mood, and your overall performance at work. This is normal, since as humans, we can only bear so much.

You can never avoid these stressors in your workplace. In fact, it is impossible not to encounter any setbacks at work.  However, you can work your way around these setbacks and welcome positive energy by finding out what motivates you.

When you’re ready to leave your tasks and just pack a suitcase and fly to Hawaii, you need to think of what drives you to get up and ride that bus to work.

Find out what really wakes you up in the morning. It might be your lovely daughter who wants ballet lessons, or a planned trip at the end of the year.

Your motivation is what you need to hold on to when you’re feeling stressed and burned out. It will urge you to get up and move forward when you’re too tired to do anything.

Nurture the best sides of you

You are a walking advertisement of what you can contribute to your workplace. Therefore, you must take care of yourself well.

The best sides of your personality should be nurtured as much as possible. You need to work on yourself, so you can show the world what you are capable of.

Anywhere you go, kindness begets kindness. Make sure that you smile and say “please” and “thank you” when you need to.

Being your best self at work can set an excellent career path for you. You’ll have great connections and learn the secrets of your trade easily. All you need to do is to work on yourself, and your future will look as bright as you hope it would be.
